Increasing numbers of individuals from endangered or cultivated species

Cryogenetics together with French, Italian and Norwegian partners will use cryotechnologies and gene analysis as tools for multiplying individuals of endangered or cultivated species.

 A global challenge

Several fish species and populations in river systems are heavily influenced by multiple factors adding to a non-sustainable situation. The status varies from being on an endangered species list (“Red listed”) to rivers needing some degree of active supplementation with hatchery-produced fingerlings. This is a global challenge.

The project

The goal of this project is to establish tools for scaling up numbers of individuals from endangered or cultivated species with control of inbreeding and sustainable genetic monitoring of species. To achieve this, cryopreservation of milt from the various species in the project will be combined with genetic SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) data to avoid inbreeding.
